Virus Information Page

Note: This page will be updated as necessary.  Check back regularly for updates.

NOTE: If you think you have a virus on your system and you need to check for free, go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and run their free on-line virus scanner. (Note: these links open into external websites not controlled by UpHi.net, LLC.)

UpHi.net is using the latest technology and methods to protect our customers from today's greatest threat on the Internet -- computer viruses.  One way we do this is to scan all e-mail coming in to our servers and remove the harmful codes so that our customer's computers and most importantly, their data, is not compromised to the outside world.  85% or more of known computer viruses are spread through e-mail.

There are security vulnerabilities in virtually all operating systems and applications in use today.  Many of these vulnerabilities are discovered and exploited by computer hackers mostly for self-gratification, but some choose more sinister uses for these exploits which wreak worldwide chaos and havoc.  Undoubtedly, most people have heard of some of computer viruses causing global problems in the news (e.g. "ILoveYou", "Melissa" macro viruses, "Netsky (SomeFool)", "Beagle (Bagle)" Internet worms) that are spread through e-mail to unsuspecting computer users.  Often, they are disguised as attachments to e-mail from apparently legitimate e-mail addresses.  Once that attachment is run, however, the virus payload is dropped and another computer is infected, spreading the virus to other unsuspecting users, often without being detected.  Most viruses do not damage the host computer, but instead, use the host as a launch point to replicate itself to others as fast as it can before it is detected and removed.  Most times, only those in the computer industry have enough of a trained eye to spot these threats and stop them.  This leaves a vast majority of other people vulnerable.

UpHi.net has recognized that there are many different threats to our customers and to our own systems from the Internet and has become proactive in reducing many of those threats within our network.  One of these ways is by using an e-mail scanner reduce the number of scripts, forms, and attachments that sneak through our systems.  UpHi.net's MailScanner automatically examines each incoming e-mail and detects most viruses in order to stop them before they ever reach our customers.  So even if our customer's system is missing a critical patch for a vulnerability, we have already taken steps to alleviate that threat from becoming a nightmare for our customer.

This is by no means a fool-proof program and we strongly urge our customers to acquire an anti-virus program for their system.  Symantec's Norton AntiVirus and McAfee's VirusScan are well-known anti-virus programs which are reasonably priced and available to everyone.  There is also a FREE version of a very good fully-functional anti-virus software program -- GriSoft's AVG Anti-Virus.  There are other excellent companies and anti-virus programs to choose from. These are just a few examples of many available. (Note: these links open into external websites not controlled by UpHi.net, LLC.)

No matter which option you choose, UpHi.net strongly encourages our customers to install a good anti-virus program and keep it updated regularly.  Use the automatic update feature of the anti-virus program so that you are protected from the latest known threats.  Also, make sure that the operating system (Microsoft Windows, Macintosh OS 9, OS X, Linux, etc.) is patched regularly.  Microsoft Windows "Critical Update" patches can be found at their update site.  Macintosh patches can be found at Apple's site.  (Note: these links open into external websites not controlled by UpHi.net, LLC.)
